Proverbs 15:2 – The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly. But the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness.

Bible Challenges and Comments
In the April 2014 magazine “Proceedings” of the U.S. Naval Institute there is a small article titled “In Defense of Taking Risks” by Commander J.A. Craig (Retired); apparently he has more to say in the February 2014 Issue, but for today this will suffice.

Quoting! “There was a time when U.S. Navy Officers were allowed to make mistakes and learn from them. John Paul Jones stressed the need for seniors to recognize “well-meant shortcomings” and to make appropriate allowances. When a young Chester W. Nimitz ran his ship aground in 1907, he was allowed to continue his career.

But in the years leading up to U.S. entry into World War II, risk avoidance was the rule, 30 percent of U.S. submarine skippers had to be relieved of command. They were ineffective because of their overly cautious upbringing. These were good officers who simply had aggressiveness and innovation bred out of them by a risk-adverse, mistake-fearing culture.

In my own active-duty days, the “zero-defects” attitude was alive and well, I never saw a case where a junior officer who had made an error of any significance was given “another chance” as advocated by Commander Craig. (actually – zero tolerance relating to drugs I believe, I do not recall "zero-defects" although someone else might). Brings up another thought, if the Navy had a zero-defect policy. None of us would have completed boot camp.

I thought about this retired Commander’s statement because of one comment and here it is: “They were ineffective because of their overly cautious upbringing”. WARNING, do we accept the making of costly mistakes as a personal failure or do we simply say that an error in judgment that cost the lives of many is the fault of our parental upbringing!

Proverbs 13:1 – A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, but the scoffer does not listen to rebuke. I would feel a lot better about the article above and may be willing to give opportunity to some young buck of an officer another chance when full responsibility for an error in judgment is accepted and corrected by them.

Children, in accordance with biblical teaching are to “Obey their parents” as stated in Ephesians 6:1-4 – first the training is for the child, it is right to obey for in doing so you honor your father and mother and this is a command that promises a reward and not a career ending mistake.

Ephesians 6:3 – that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth. Sometimes I believe we miss the mark of this verse; “that it may be well with you”. This does not mean that mistakes will not happen, but it does mean that obedience to fulfilling the New Testament Law of Liberty makes provision for error in life.

Here is the rub! There is responsibility on the burden of upbringing by parents to keep from causing wrath to develop in the heart of children. “Wrath” is not causing the child to be overly cautious as to how they govern their future, but how to destroy it. Wrath is sin, personal sin. It is not the sin of the parent although related, but the child. What is the qualifier for this? (PERSONAL sin).

The bottom line: whatever future a young person has in front of them is personal to them alone. Surely as parents we influence our children to “do” many things; “right and wrong” but it is also the young person who disobeys commands from the Living Word of God and who disobeys parents ending in the destruction of lives and careers.

Romans 1:30-32 says this! Backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful, who knowing the righteous judgment of God that those who practice such things are worthy of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them. (Did you notice! all of these are motivate by wrath!).
